We learned a lot about local culture and agriculture on the way to the ruins (about a 50-minute drive) and then at the site, we had plenty of time to view the ruins and learn more from Erick, who had actually spent time helping to unearth some of these majestic ruins as a child. They took great care and managed the time well.Įrick and Carlos were fantastic tour guides for our trip to the Chacchoben Mayan ruins. I was a little nervous booking with an outside tour group, worried we might not get back in time for departure, but I am so glad I did. I would definitely use this company again and I hope that Yoshi, Eliot and Abel are available!! Everyone with Native Choice was easy to work with and friendly. We made a short stop on the drive back to buy some delicious pineapple and they dropped us off as near to the port entrance as they could. The tour guides were very helpful while at the resort area and kept us on schedule. It is fairly rocky anywhere you would enter the water. I do recommend using water shoes as the rocks are quite slick. They had restroom facilities and kayaks, tubes and stand up paddle boards for use. The private resort area was nice and our lunch and drinks were good. Our guides (Yoshi -our guide & Eliot-the other guide) were fun and informative and made the hour or so drive go by fairly quickly.

Our driver was Abel and the van was very nice and brand new. We easily found the new location to check in and they had us divided quickly into our 2 vans. We had a group of 21 people for this tour. But seeing Mayan ruins somewhere on this route was a bucket list item. The port of Costa Maya was beautiful and you wished we had more time to explore it. On the drive back, we stopped at a roadside fruit stand and bought fresh pineapple, mango and pineapple bread, each serving was about a dollar. The visit to the ruins was nice, but our particular guide seemed more knowledgeable about vegetation and ancient medicine than the ruins themself. This took pretty much the entire (very short) port time in Costa maya. It was even safe by american standards! What a delightful change in pace! It was about an hour drive to the ruins. After being in Belize the day before, feeling like we were risking our lives with a driver on Belizean roads, the driver from "Native Choice," comparatively, drove like a careful old Grandpa who just got a brand new Buick and he wasn't about to let it get a scratch or bump. Our group of five joined about 10 other people in a brand-new, very clean 15 passenger van. It was a little confusing to find, but there were lots of helpful people around the port who pointed us in the right direction. We walked from the port to the meeting site, which was probably about a mile. We took the Mayan ruins Tour on December 26th, coming off the Carnival Breeze.
